Thanks to the efforts of the Pro Shop staff and the support of the Board of Trustees, Copper Hill offers an outstanding and well-rounded Junior Golf Program for its younger members. One needs only to review the golfing success of many of its alumni at the local, collegiate and state levels as testimony to the quality of the overall program in addition to those who have simply learned to enjoy the game.

Each segment of the instructional program is geared to the varied chronological, developmental, and skill levels of our members 5 to 19 years of age in junior clinics and camps, with the introduction to competitive golf for the older set through the Junior Golf Association. Although JGA members compete in an assortment of weekly tournaments, the emphasis is clearly to have fun, enjoy the game and learn the etiquette and rules of golf.

JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION SCHEDULING CHANGES FOR 2008
The JGA will move from Friday mornings to Tuesday afternoons. JGA members will participate in a brief golf workshop beginning at 2:30 p.m. and tee-off at 3:00 p.m. The change from early Friday mornings to Tuesday afternoons is more in keeping with the typical teenager’s schedule and is expected to attract more players. The JGA workshop is at 2:30 p.m., golf workshops and tee-off aim to better educate the young golfer. This time is dedicated to a variety of activities such as the Pro’s golf tip, proper etiquette, skill drills, rules review, proper warm-up, sign-up and player assignments, explanation of the tournament format, etc. Tee-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with senior volunteers and mentors acting as rules officials, supervisors, and at times playing partners.

JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION MENTORING PROGRAM
Another recent innovation is the mentoring program which will be continued this year. This unique feature allows “senior” members of the association to serve as mentors to younger members during the workshop and competitions. The mentor’s responsibility is to lead by example, help and support our JGA members, and, most of all encourage what might be considered the Copper Hill Junior Golf motto “Have fun, enjoy the game and always show respect for the rules of golf and your competitors.”

It should be noted that many of our former mentors who are now in college used this activity to support their community service contribution portion of their college applications as well as enjoying the mentoring experience. Where warranted, the professional golf staff has written certifying letters when requested.

Those interested in the mentoring program should contact our professional staff prior to the beginning of the 2008 Junior Golf season. Also, any adult golf members who have an interest is assisting the JGA program should contact the professional staff or Joe Zubko.

In conclusion, Copper Hill provides a nurturing junior golf program suited to the varied golfing abilities of its junior membership. For more information please consult the 2008 CHCC yearbook and/or one of the members of the professional staff.
